Below are a list of questions our staff are frequently asked about Glasgow Museums.
Where can I find out about job vacancies in your museums and galleries?
Glasgow Museums are programmed and managed by Culture and Sport Glasgow on behalf of Glasgow City Council. Vacancies are listed on the Culture and Sport website at www.csglasgow.org.
What is the cost of admission to Glasgow Museums?
Admission is free at all Glasgow Musuems venues. For some temporary exhibitions a small entry charge may apply. Entry to Pollok House is free from November to March only.
Are the museums open all year?
Check individual venue pages for specific details of the museum you intend to visit.
The majority of museums are open 7 days per week throughout the year. All museums are closed on 25, 26 December (with early closing on 24 December) and 1, 2 January (with early closing on 31 December).
What are the opening times of the museums?
In general our opening times are: Monday to Thursday and Saturday 10am to 5pm, Friday and Sunday 11am to 5pm; the Gallery of Modern Art is open until 8pm on Thursdays. Check the individual venue page of the museum you intend to visit, or call the venue before your visit.
Is there wheelchair access at all GM venues?
Yes, with the exception of Provand's Lordship (Glasgow's oldest surviving dwelling), which has limited wheelchair access. Glasgow Museums is committed to improving access at all of our venues. Ramps, level access and lifts allow wheelchair users to access all floors within most of our venues. In 2001 a major £250,000 project was completed at Scotland Street School Museum, including the installation of a lift (allowing access to all floors) and entrance ramps. Please refer to the 'Access' section at the venue you intend to visit.
Is there wheelchair access to the toilets?
With the exception of Provand’s Lordship, all venues have toilets which allow wheelchair access. Provand’s Lordship has no toilet facilities on-site, but visitors are directed to the facilities in St Mungo Museum, 10 metres from Provand’s Lordship on Castle Street.
Can I hire a Glasgow Museums' venue for a corporate hospitality or community event?

Are there regular guided tours at each venue?
Many, but not all, venues operate free public guided tours throughout the week and at weekends. Check the individual venue page for details, or call the venue before your visit.
Can I book a guided tour for a group of 10 people?
Yes, the majority of our venues offer free public guided tours provided by our experienced Volunteer Guides. Check the individual venue pages to establish if tours are available. Phone the venue you intend to visit for details of our general and specialist tours. Booking is only required for groups of 10 persons or more. For large groups, early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
Can I park my car at GM venues free of charge?
Check individual venue details for information on car parking. Free car parking is not usually available at venues, but Pay and Display car parks tend to be located near each venue. Pay and display car and coach parking is available at the Burrell Collection. Limited free parking is available at the People's Palace. For Fossil Grove, on-street parking is available free of charge on roads bordering Victoria Park.
What about disabled parking?
Disabled parking bays are available at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Museum of Transport, Burrell Collection, Pollok House and the People's Palace and Winter Gardens.
Do you provide guided tours in foreign languages?
At present we do not offer tours in foreign languages, however the Burrell Collection may offer private foreign language tours to visiting groups on request during the summer months. Phone the Burrell Collection Volunteer Guides on 0141 287 2596 for details.
Is there a catering facility at each venue?
Catering facilities are available at: Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, St Mungo Museum, Gallery of Modern Art, Museum of Transport, People's Palace, Pollok House, and the Burrell Collection (café and restaurant). There are no catering facilities at Martyr's School or Fossil Grove.
Which motorway exit do I take to the Burrell Collection?
Junction 1 off the M77 motorway to the south of the city. The Burrell Collection is signposted from the exit junction.
Which motorway exit do I take for St Mungo Museum?
St Mungo Museum, Provand’s Lordship and Martyrs’ School are all located close to Glasgow Cathedral and the Royal Infirmary in the northeastern area of the city centre. Take junction 15 off the M8 motorway and follow signs for Glasgow Cathedral.
I am visiting Glasgow city centre for an afternoon only, which museums are within walking distance of each other?
Starting at the southern end of the city centre, an achievable walking tour is as follows:
begin your tour at People's Palace, walk for 15-20 minutes from Glasgow Green, through Trongate, heading north up High Street to St Mungo Museum. Following your visit to St Mungo Museum, cross Castle Street and visit Provand's Lordship. From Provand's Lordship, Martyrs' School is a five minute walk (direction north west). From Martyrs' School, the Gallery of Modern Art is a 15 minute walk (direction south west) along Cathedral Street and through George Square.
A number of Glasgow Museums can be visited in one day by using public transport. Check the individual venue pages for the bus service, rail or subway station which is closest to each museum.

Is there a bus service which stops near all of the museums?

Can Glasgow Museums give me information or advice on valuations and conservation information for my antiques?
Enquiries can be made in person at the Study Centre in Kelvingrove, by letter or by email to museums@csglasgow.org. However, it is not our policy to give valuations on antiques or other items. Letters should be sent to The Curatorial Department, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Argyle Street, Glasgow G3 8AG.
Does Glasgow Museums website have an electronic newsletter?
This is planned for a later stage of the website's development. When this service becomes available, it will be prominently displayed on the Home page.
